Who is Andre Toulon?

Although it is not stated who his parents are, he was obsessed with puppets from an early age and ran a puppet show in Paris. It was there he met Ilsa his future wife, who regularly attended the shows as she had little better to do, being kept under lock and key by her father the Swiss ambassador.

Not long after they met Toulon saw a dying man outside his theatre, and he helped him inside to help him recover. This was the major turning point in Andre Toulon's life, however, as he turned out to be the immortal Egyptian sorceror Afzel who stole the secret of life aeons ago from a higher dimensional being, Sutehk. Afzel showed him how to imbue his puppets with life, and he did so with the souls of his friends who are murdered by Sutehk's acolytes, now hot on his tail. Eventually Toulon won that particular battle, but eventually grew frightened of the forces he had unleashed and left the puppets to their own devices as he and Ilsa went to start a new life in Berlin. Here he returned to performing simple puppet shows for children and had the happiest period of his life, until war broke out in 1939.

Many of his friends were executed in the war, among them Hans Seiderman a bookkeeper, and Herman Strauss , a lorry driver killed for smuggling food to Jewish camps. Fed up with the destruction of his life, Toulon returned to the secrets Afzel taught him all those years ago and animated some of his newest creations, among them Pinhead and Jester who allowed Strauss and Seiderman respectively to live on. He then carried on his puppet show until the Nazis banned it and shot his wife. This saw Toulon finally harness the power of his puppets to kill. After being caught by Nazi soldiers, the puppets went on a killing spree that eventually allowed them all to escape to Switzerland, and then to America. However the Nazis still went after Toulon, and after they traced him to a hotel he was staying in in Bodega Bay, he knew the game was up.  He shot himself through the head , but not before sealing his puppets away in the wall.
